Hunter Thompson’s spring training will start a little earlier, hopefully in Florida during the 2017 Christmas holiday.
The 2017 World Series between the Houston Astros and Los Angeles Dodgers is underway. Hailey student Hunter Thompson is sure to be watching and following the action.
Thompson, 13, is a 5-6, 145-pound right-handed pitcher and shortstop on track to graduate from Wood River High School in 2022.
He wears the “WR” logo on his baseball cap. And he’s looking forward to going to Florida in December to play a little baseball.
Thompson was chosen to participate in the Baseball Factory Winter Classic Session 2 for the 12-14 age class. And he is planning to make the trip to the middle school national event Dec. 27-30 at Historic Dodgertown in Vero Beach, Fla.
“We will be competing against the best players and teams in the country and will be coached by pro baseball players and pro scouts,” said Thompson, one of two Idaho kids picked for the middle school participation and evaluation camp.
He is currently raising money to make the trip, at levels from Base Hit ($25) to Grand Slam ($300).
Thompson said, “My financial obligation is to fundraise $4,000 to cover my expenses such as local transportation, hotel, food, training, coaching, uniform, registration, insurance, air fare and other costs.”
In his fundraising letter, Thompson said, “I’ve trained for years with the hopes and dreams of playing with the best. This great experience will help me reach my highest potential and receive national recognition to help me play college baseball.
“I love baseball and hope you will be able to help.”
Thompson is a son of Bradley and Christi Thompson of Hailey. Bradley Thompson is president of the Wood River Baseball and Softball Association.
